Thinking of renting in one of the hostels in Giethoorn? Before we dive into that, what is a hostel?

A hostel is a low-budget accommodation that is shared. That means, you’re going to share a room with other travelers. In a hostel, you don’t book a room, instead, you book a bed for the night.

Depending on the size of the hostel, you can be with four travelers in one room, while it can go up to 20. The bathrooms will take you back to your college days with several shower stalls and a row of sinks. Usually, hostels have one to two bathrooms.

Hostels are popular for backpackers who are looking for a way to save more money. That is, if you don’t mind sharing with strangers.

You will find that most hostels are located in major cities in the Netherlands. In Giethoorn, there’s only one hostel, but we have listed some other hostels you can rent in nearby.

Here are some of them:

The Black Sheep Hostel – $73

Located on the main canal (Dorpsgracht) of Giethoorn, The Black Sheep Hostel is the only hostel in the village. It’s a thatched-roof farmhouse with clean and comfy rooms. There is also a spacious garden with a magnificent view of the canal. Make yourself at home in the common area that comes equipped with a kitchen.

Mooi Oldemarkt

This isn’t really a hostel, but a close one. It is 11 miles from Giethoorn. What’s best about this property is that it has a restaurant, so you don’t have to go too far for your meals.

As you can see, there are only a few hostels in Overjissel, and only one in Giethoorn. This is because these are small villages and cities.

Before you stay in a hostel, make sure you read reviews first. Do as much research as possible. The reviews you will see online are mostly reliable because they are written by people who are either very satisfied or not. Still, the insights you will get out of them will be helpful in your decision-making process.

Another thing is, it’s best to book only one night first, just in case you have a disastrous first night or you decide you would like to stay elsewhere.

Another thing, don’t forget to bring your toiletries! Since you’re staying in a hostel, there won’t be any freebies like you would normally get in hotels. Most hostels don’t provide shampoo, soap or even towels. So, make sure you bring toiletries with you.

You should also be considerate of your roommates when you stay in a hostel. Come quietly in the evenings and leave quietly. Don’t make a mess around the room and make sure you protect all your valuables.

Staying in a hostel in Giethoorn requires an open mind. Surely, you will have a unique experience. Who knows? You might do it again next time!
