The Weerribben-Wieden National Park is a 10,000-hectare national park in the Netherlands that has the largest bog in the whole of northwestern Europe.
In this park, there are two areas—the De Weerribben and De Wieden. What makes the park extra special is that it’s made of human hands. The work by peat cutters began in the middle of the 16th century, which only stopped in the 20th century, and from there, a unique nature reserve came to life.
There are a lot of species of bog plants here, such as water soldiers and lilies, while the cuckoo flower and cottongrass inject more color to the unique landscape. You will also see here the copper butterfly and the Norfolk damselfly. Moreover, you shouldn’t miss the otters that swim in the lakes.
Sail Your Way Around
Every day, an open boat goes around the lakes and through small winding canals. You will find different boat trips here that last from one hour to 45 minutes and four hours.
Check Out The Peat Workers’ Huts
You can visit the huts used by peat workers who dug out the peat. No need to ride a boat for this one as it’s accessible by foot.
Hop On A Floating Barge
If you’re up for some more adventure, walk the nature trail through the marshy land where you need to pull yourself across on a floating barge.
Visit The Villages
You can take the Ecowaterbus that sails twice a day. Here you will get a chance to pass through the villages—Sint Jansklooster and Giethoorn, and Sint Jansklooster and Blokzijl.
Up The Water Tower
Seeing the water tower from the lake is a sight to behold. But if you’re feeling more daring, climb the 207 steps of the water tower and enjoy the birds-eye view of De Wieden. You can find this watch tower in Sint-Jansklooster.
Explore De Wieden
You can walk on the floating walkway where you can see the beautiful De Wieden. It’s accessible for wheelchairs and buggies.
In The Weerribben
On the edge of the national park you will find a small-scale holiday park, the Villapark de Weerribben. The park has a heating swimming pool with paddling pool that is perfect if you have children with you. You can also go fishing. If you’re up for more adventure, you can go to the Klimbos Avontuurlijk Paasloo.
Rest & Relaxation
While you’re here, you can stay at the Hotel Huis ten Wolde in the Weerribben. They offer contemporary rooms that will make your stay comfortable and cosy. Aside from that, you will be surrounded by nature.
